As I walked upon the highlands,
On a fine summer's day,
There I met a sad young maiden,
Whose lament I now relay.

Chorus:
O the Summer Sun is fading,
Autumn Rains soon shall come,
And my Love is parted from me,
Gone to far Jerusalem.

O he's gone to fight the Muslim,
In God's own Holy Land.
Yet I fear that Death must take me
'Ere once more I take his hand.

O the Summer Sun is fading,
Autumn Rains soon shall come,
And my Love is parted from me,
Gone to far Jerusalem.

O I pray for him daily,
Though I fear his fate is made,
And I fear he'll die a cruel death
On a Saracen's curved blade.

O the Summer Sun is fading,
Autumn Rains soon shall come,
And my Love is parted from me,
Gone to far Jerusalem.

O I know that there is glory
To fight in the Crusade,
But I'd rather he were with me
In the home that we have made.

O the Summer Sun is fading,
Autumn Rains soon shall come,
And my Love is parted from me,
Gone to far Jerusalem.

O the Summer Sun is fading,
Autumn Rains soon shall come,
And my Love is parted from me,
Gone to far Jerusalem.

O the Summer Sun is fading,
Autumn Rains soon shall come,
And my Love is parted from me,
Gone to far Jerusalem.
